unruly gardens + future dried florals

For whatever reason, I’m not entirely sure how (that’s a lie-I know how), this year’s gardens got away from me. Four of my flower boxes didn’t takeoff at all, and I only got a handful of stunted asters from those. The Dahlia boxes became overrun with weeds, although they did produce some beauties despite the invasion. Volunteer verbena from last year sprung up out of nowhere early July and completely smothered out the handful of craspedia that the chickens hadn’t eaten back in spring. The zinnia box, feverfew and the previously mentioned verbena did well, but the star of the garden for a second year was my gomphrena! This year I went bright with the purple and orange and my gosh do those colors make your eyes cross when you stare directly at them. It’s amazing to see the color that nature can create from a tiny little speck of a seed. I just cut myself a huge bouquet that’s currently dominating our dining table. Can’t wait to cut the rest back and hang as dried flowers for @saltcreekmercantile spring bouquets next year 🤍
